A lucky break in a rainy week boded well for the annual Labour Day of Caring.
With the weather gods co-operating and the early arrival of eager volunteers, the day got started. Soon the sounds of power washers, hedge trimmers and rakes and clippers could be heard and the volunteers were hard at work clipping, shearing, climbing ladders and painting – everything they could do in a few hours to improve the exterior of a house.
There was activity inside the house too. Charlford House Society for Women is a non-profit residence, providing a supportive home for women addressing their addictions and embarking on a journey to recovery. They need the safe and structured support of professional staff and peers. The women showed their appreciation by preparing lunch for the volunteer group.
Around a lunch table, the labour volunteers introduced themselves and their unions and all felt so grateful for the opportunity to see and hear first-hand about the work of the agency in the community. They also felt revitalized about the work they do to help raise funds for United Way of the Lower Mainland to ensure services are available.
The agency told the group about their long history of helping women with addictions and the ongoing support offered to the women after they move forward with their lives.
Senior volunteer Brian Nasu summed up the day by saying, “We help the agency, we have fun, we learn about our community and it feels good – Day of Caring is a very worthwhile program.”
The Vancouver Sun United Way Day of Caring is a unique opportunity for employees to come together, develop team-building skills and make a difference in the community by taking part in one-day work projects at Metro Vancouver not-for-profit social service agencies.
Day of Caring is a community partnership between United Way, The Vancouver Sun, Volunteer Centres, community agencies and organization employee groups.
