I got a hand-me-down computer recently from a relative, its processor is 200mhz faster than my primary system, a Dell Inspiron 6000 (aging with grace, thank you) but it has awful onboard graphics and sound so it's really not very useful to me...unless I add a TV Tuner Card and stick it on a cart in the corner of my room for use as a TV!
Right now it's a Dell Dimension 4500S, circa 2002, with the following stats:
P4 @ 1.8ghz
512mb DDR2 SDRAM
Unknown Onboard Sound
Intel "Extreme" (haha) Onboard Graphics
Linksys Wireless-B PCI Card
Belkin 10/100 Ethernet Card
Worn out CDRW Drive
NO AGP SLOT
USB Bus Powered Speakers
15" Dell Fishbowl Monitor
On order is a Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600 which will be the heart of this weakling.
Right now there's CAT-5 strung across the hall to feed my laptop, but after finally getting our wireless network accessible (I hate you, Linksys) I may have to wind up replacing the CAT-5 with coaxial cable to get my new found TV fix!
UPDATE 13 June: This old Dell doesn't have the horsepower to process HD television broadcasts, I'd put the blame more on the anemic integrated Intel graphics (the system doesn't even have an AGP port) than the 1.8ghz P4...It handles analog TV perfectly though, but the WinTV software is still as buggy as I remember it being back in 2001 when I last used it. The remote is very...twitchy, but that could be because WinTV pegs the processor near 100% all the time and the remote control application has to fight for attention.
More or less a waste of money until I can put this baby in a more worthy system, which has been put off indefinitely. linksys media
